An inside joke among Thais, they claimed that you might run into any celebrity at Thonglor, which would describe how trendy this neighborhood is. From hippy cafes to high-rise condominiums to popular nightlife, Thonglor is one of the hottest areas in Bangkok.

Thonglor, or it is well known as Soi Sukhumvit 55 as separated from Sukhumvit Road that converges with Phetchaburi road at the end of the street, is commonly known as a source of international restaurants, shopping centers for multi-nationalities, and expats in Bangkok, especially the Japanese community. 

Thonglor is getting popular day-by-day, since it offers such a diverse environment for its residents and tourists. This makes the land prices in Thonglor increase every year, it is considered one of the most expensive areas in Bangkok.

Shopping Malls

  • J Avenue Thonglor  

One of the very first few lifestyle shopping malls in the area are full with tons of restaurants and retail stores. J Avenue Thonglor offers a non-mall format as the building is open air so customers won’t feel like they’re at a typical shopping center at all. 

  • Donki Mall Thonglor 

The one and only Donki mall in Thailand, a Japanese complex shopping mall opened for 24-hours, you will find grocery stores selling good-quality products imported from Japan and tons of Japanese restaurants there! 

The Commons Thonglor

  • The Commons Thonglor 

An open-plan community mall for hippies to hangout, the Commons Thonglor is full of nice restaurants and bars, which all are open until late. You can show up on day time to chill out with your friends with some coffee and brunch, then stay for drinks until the moon is up. 

  • 72 Courtyard 

Another open-plan mall located just opposite from The Commons, 72 Courtyard is well known for night experiences, as it is full of dining restaurants, clubs, and bars, followed by Beer Belly and BEAM for party goers.

How to get to Thonglor

By Public Transportation 

Located by the front of the street is Thonglor BTS station, and just a few steps walk from the station will directly take you to the neighborhood. Since the whole street of Soi Sukhumvit 55 from the very first to end covered over 2 kilometers, some places can be reached via walking but somes can't. But no worries, motorbike services are available to take you to places in Thonglor at almost every corner.

By Car 

Thonglor is connected two major roads of Bangkok, which are Sukhumvit road of northern Wattana district and Petchaburi road, an easy access to Asoke area. Despite an amount of traffic throughout the day, Thonglor offers a shortcut via Soi Thonglor 10 to Ekamai, the nearer neighborhood, which is only 500 meters away.

Thonglor’s upcoming landmarks 

As a hub of urban living and luxurious lifestyle, residential projects in Thonglor are growing rapidly. The Park Origin is one of them, a 3-building high rise condominium following the concept of ‘A Perfect Living Platform’ with a mix of nature and home automation technology. The Park Origin is surrounded by top locations in Thonglor such as restaurant and bars, community malls, and hospitals. The project itself is scheduled for residents to move in by the end of 2022. 

Another upcoming project that is expected to be ready by the end of 2022 is The Market Place Thonglor, a mix design of both offices and commercial buildings. It is predicted to become one of Thonglor’s hangout spots in the future.

How much the area cost in Thonglor

Thonglor has a lot of potential for businesses and as mentioned, the price has increased every year, with the current price on the market being 450,000 baht/sq. (as of 28 September 2022), and the residential market is continuing to grow. You will notice high-rise and high-end condominiums are under operation when you visit the area. As expected, Thonglor will attract more residency to make this area their home.  

The rental price is starting from 12,000 baht/month for a condominium studio room. And of course, the closer to the skytrain station and the more luxurious, the higher the rental price. But if you’re looking for an urban luxury lifestyle, Thonglor is definitely the one.
