As residents, you all are aware by now that garbage is an unavoidable issue. From plastic bottles to parcels, yours or somebody else's, garbage can become a big issue in a long run if left untreated right from the beginning.

The different types of garbage issues you may run into

Excessive Garbage

Sometimes what'll happen is there's too much garbage in each day to the point the garbage truck may not be able to pick all of them up and take them away. To rectify this issue, it is recommended you regularly take out the garbage one load at a time so that it does not pose too much of a challenge for garbage trucks in a long run.

The absence of a garbage truck

This particular issue in which the garbage truck didn't come pick up the garbage load is relatively common with newly launched housing projects, when the involved agencies are unaware of the presence of residents, or if the garbage truck's frequency hasn't been completely finalized. You have the option to rectify this issue by reaching out to relevant agencies, unless certain villages require the payment of garbage fees. Should the absence of a garbage truck be an issue, please reach out to the juristic office.

The garbage truck couldn't pick up certain types of garbage

Certain types of garbage like furniture, electrical appliances, twigs, or broken remains of objects cannot be picked up and thrown out by garbage trucks due to difficulties transporting. Should any house decide to dispose of these types of garbage, things like twigs should be snapped apart into smaller pieces before putting them in bags to be thrown out. On the other hand, things that can still be put to some good use such as furniture or electrical appliances would be better off donated or sold.

Damage to garbage bags caused by dogs

Sometimes stray dogs might run into garbage bags and chew them open, causing garbage to spill out, in order to find food. This results in garbage being scattered all over the front of the house. What may also happen, even if you throw the garbage out into an actual bin, sometimes dogs could still tip the bin over anyway. You can rectify this issue by using a larger trash bin which is more difficult for dogs to knock over, use a garbage bin with a lid on top, or use garbage bins with additional support via stand. Alternatively, you also have the option to set the garbage bag down by the house fence until the garbage truck arrives.

The Neighbors' garbage problems

The biggest and most frustrating garbage-related issue when it comes to houses is none other than dealing with ones caused by the likes of your neighbors.

Excessive garbage leaking out to the other person's house

If you live exactly next to each other, you might find your neighbors' garbage sometimes leaking out and to your own house. While nobody wants another person's garbage leaking to their house, the best way to rectify this issue is to take it easy and talk it out with your neighbors. Should your neighbors be stubborn and careless, you can complain to the juristic office or any relevant agencies as the last resort.

Throwing garbage in someone else's bins

Some might also find neighbors cross-bin-throwing garbage away to be an issue, intentionally or accidentally. To counteract this problem, newer villages are now offering a dedicated garbage disposal area separated by a door in order for houses to leave garbage bags by their own fences waiting for garbage trucks to arrive.

How do I deal with my careless neighbors regarding garbage?

Should the village lack a dedicated garbage area, you should try talking it out with your neighbor first. If that doesn't work and your neighbors are still acting careless as usual, you may consult the juristic office or take legal action as a last resort if absolutely forced to. Should your neighbors remain careless and irresponsibly disposing of garbage around your house or into your bins intentionally, he/she will face a one month imprisonment or a fine of 10,000 baht, or both (due to being a privacy violation as per article 420 of the Civil and Commercial Code and a violation of Article 389 of the Criminal Code).

What are the garbage fees?

Current

The current garbage fees for Bangkok and its vicinities as well as other provinces start at 20 baht/month. For garbage exceeding 20 litres/day or if there are any bigger loads of garbage, garbage fees will subsequently increase.

Updated

Bangkok will be the first to charge 80 baht/month for garbage fees, specifically 40 baht for garbage collection fees and another 40 baht for garbage disposal. The reason for the addition of garbage disposal fees is due to kitchen waste difficulties.

Monthly garbage and general waaste collection fees

Amount/dayGarbage fees/month
20 litres or less40 baht
Over 20 litres but less than 500 litres20 litres/unit, 65 baht/unit (half unit for less than 10 litres, one whole unit for exceeding 10 litres)
Over 500 litres but less than one metre cubed2450 baht
Over one metre cubed1 metre cubed/unit, 3250/unit (half unit for less than 1 metre cubed, full unit for exceeding 1 metre cubed)

Monthly general waste disposal fees

Amount/dayDisposal fees/month
20 litres or less40 baht
Over 20 litres but less than 500 litres20 litres/unit, 70 baht/unit (half unit for less than 10 litres, one whole unit for exceeding 10 litres)
Over 500 litres but less than one metre cubed2650 baht
Over one metre cubed1 metre cubed/unit, 3500/unit (half unit for less than 1 metre cubed, full unit for exceeding 1 metre cubed)

Where can I pay garbage fees?

Usually the agencies involved will send a representative to collect garbage fees at your house, to which there will be a receipt as proof of payment completion. You also have the option to go pay at the district office or the Department of Local Administration. If you live in a village, garbage fees are already included in the common fees, to which the juristic office will then take responsibility of that for you.

Conclusion

All in all, if one does not properly dispose of a garbage load, the garbage will pile up into one massive load and in the end, neither you or the garbage truck would be able to dispose of the garbage load. To make sure an untreated garbage overload doesn't happen in the first place, make sure you take out or dispose of your garbage one load at a time.
